The "Superbowl" of Hollywood

And so another Oscar show has come to pass and we are left feeling much better than we did last year. Billy Crystal returned and brought back all the oldies that are still goodies. The night was really a tribute to the Oscar tradition and Old Hollywood, although many are grumbling about the Academy being a bit too old and out of touch.

One curious observation, why does a notoriously long awards show start a half hour later than all the other awards shows at 8:30?

At least the fashion was a mixed bag last night so let's recap!

As it has been on the runways, white was the big staple of the night. The labor day rule is definitely no more. Milla Jovovich was gorgeous in a sleek and structured one shoulder white Elie Saab couture with Jacob & Co jewelry. It looked as if it could have stood up on its own. Octavia Spencer was picture perfect in her trusty go to designer, Tadashi Shoji. At first glance it looked like a light lavender, but it must have been the heavy beading on the white gown that threw us off. Another white hot stand out was Li Bingbing in George Chakra Couture and Cindy Chao. Gwyneth Paltrow arrived in a simple Tom Ford dress with stiff cap sleeves that supported an awesome (yet unnecessary) cape. The cape dress has been a popular look lately and Paltrow took it literally this time. The look was solely for her to pull off, so please do not attempt at home. She accessorized with a Hearts of Winter cuff bracelet made of 2,368 rose-cut, round brilliant diamonds weighing 163 carats and valued at $1 million; and the double hoop Duchess Hibiscus Ring made of rose cut and round diamonds with purple sapphires set in 18-karat white gold and valued at $160,000. All by Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie.

Not all the white choices were a slam dunk. Shailene Woodley was ready for her flower power wedding in vintage Valentino. It was a love it or hate it dress and we can certainly appreciate it, but she needs to be a bit older for that look to work. Rooney Mara in droopy Givenchy. The dress is undoubtedly beautiful, but it seems to be the general consensus over the Internet that she could and should have found a last minute tailor for her last minute dress choice. She's been wearing Givenchy a lot on the red carpet so it seems they should have had a dress that was already fit to her.

Red and its associated shades were abundant as well. Emma Stone wore a fuchsia Giambattista Valli that looked very comfortable on her yet was nothing new. This particular design has already been seen on the red carpet so it didn't really wow. The color was great, although on camera it looked more tomato red. Natalie Portman was glamorous and cute at the same time in a strapless vintage Christian Dior Courture from 1954. It had polka dots people. She was one of the few that wore a necklace. Michelle Williams was also very cute, as only she can be, in a bright coral Louie Vuitton that was tiered with ruffles and a full skirted peplum design. The peplum look has usually been poofy and short like Tina Fey's Carolina Herrara, but William's peplum was its own dress last night and the dress fit was impeccable. Thankfully she left her headband at home. Jane Seymour was bright and shiny in a fire engine red Pamela Rolland reminiscent of Penelope Cruz at last year's Oscar. Best Supporting Actress nominee Janet McTeer was safe in a solid red dress. Colin Firth's wife Livia Giuggoli, who is known for her environmentally conscious fashion choices via the Green Carpet Challenge, was all in red with a dress we will assume was made from recycled diet coke cans. *Livia Giuggoli's dress was another Green Carpet Challenge dress made by the team from Valentino. Her GCC also helped Meryl Streep and three leading men in dressing in eco friendly materials.

When in doubt, be shiny. Meryl Streep was consistent to her style in a wrap style dress by Lanvin in a very foreshadowing color of gold. *Her dress was made from Eco Certified Fabric with help from the GCC. Stacy Keibler matched the old Hollywood style that her boyfriend George Clooney is known for in a bronze Marchesa gown with rusching at the hip that turned into a rose. Very classy with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Rose Byrne was sleek and elegant in an one shouldered black sequined Vivienne Westwood with Chanel jewelry. This girl really likes sequins. She and Taylor Swift should hang out. Her fellow bridesmaid, Ellie Kempner was a surprise knockout in a sparkly sandstone colored strapless Armani Prive with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. It does remind us of the pink beaded Armani Prive Claire Danes wore to the 2010 Emmys. Both stunning dresses. Jennifer Lopez was guiding the Three Wise Men with her star burst lined Zuhair Murad. The dress could have done without the sleeves. Apparently she had a partial nip slip while on stage, but it's so speculative that it doesn't matter.

Viola Davis was luminous in green. Those big green emerald drop earrings were amazing. The color just looks great on her, but her fitted Vera Wang dress was lacking. The skirt was one part ruffles and one part pleated. The dress was not worthy of such a deserving best actress. Another great pair of green emerald drops were worn by Berenice Bejo in a light mint beaded dress by Elie Saab. The tricky issue with sleeves is that you risk looking dowdy. Bejo certainly wasn't dowdy, but she could have picked a better dress. Glenn Close wore dark green Zac Posen, customized right down to her favorite blazer look.

There were lots of nude tones last night. Nude can work on a red carpet as long as it sparkles. Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel was wearing nude again and again it was very bland. Melissa McCarthy wore pink custom made Marina Rinaldi with Brian Atwood shoes and accessories because they are high school besties. Who knew? She matched it all with pink diamonds and pink tourmaline from Chopard. Cameron Diaz in Gucci with a shredded train. Is it just us or did it seem a bit tight? None of that really matters with that million dollar Tiffany necklace. Who is this Louis Roe? Whoever she is, her nude Black Halo dress looked great on her and was an interesting choice.

Jessica Chastain, the hardest working woman in show business, was a winner in black and gold embellished Alexander McQueen with Harry Winston jewels. We're always happy when someone wears McQueen on the red carpet.

Who would have thought Angelina Jolie and her right leg, in a black velvet strapless structured Atelier Versace gown, would get laughs?

Everyone was raving about Busy Phillips' Irene Neuwirth earrings. They were certainly the largest of the bunch.

Honorable Color Mentions:

Maya Rudolph in purple Johanna Johnson over lots of shape wear.

Amy Mumolo completely outshining friend and co-nominee Kristen Wiig in a blue Pamela Rolland.
Missi Pyle looking lovely in a light blue gown and Leslie Mann in dark blue Roberto Cavalli.

Sandra Bullock looked very comfortable in black and white Marchesa, although the loose top seemed like a wrong choice to most.

Penelope Cruz in a gray blue Armani Prive that had a full princess skirt. It was old school but almost in a bad way.

Notable MENtions:

Christopher Plummer is timeless in a navy velvet jacket.

Zach Galifiniakis looking rather dapper with his beard mostly gone.

Bradley Cooper grew a creepy mustache, hopefully it was grown for a role.

*Kenneth Branagh and Demian Bichir were both wearing tuxedos by Ermenegildo Zegna made from eco-friendly fabrics. Both with help from the GCC. Colin Firth was also contributing to the Green Carpet Challenge by wearing the same Tom Ford tux he wore to last years Oscars.

Why?

Judy Greer in a racer track Monique Lhullier dress. Just odd.

Melissa Leo. This was much better than last year, but still bizarre.

Show highlights:

-The show was introduced by Morgan Freeman. There's nothing that man can't make look important.

-Billy Crystal as Tin Tin. Just the sight is laughable.

-Carl the seat filler with that powder blue tux that he must have been wearing since 1959.

-Classic Movie Montage:
Wow Brad Pitt was really good looking in Legend of the Falls. Of course his name is synonymous with handsomeness, but it's been awhile since we've seen him as 'Mm mmm' good looking.

-Nick Nolte claps like Frankenstein.

-Sheila E. is playing at the Oscars with Pharell in a theater box. Interesting choice.

-Robert Downey Jr. tebowing in the wings. His and Gwyneth Paltrow's presenting bit actually worked really well. So many presenting banter bits fall flat, but they both committed appropriately.

-Emma Stone, also refreshingly funny as a presenter. Let's be friends.

-Music segment - Wow, what a backdrop. Thankfully its just a projection. And why are there only 2 nominees?

-Angelina Jolie presenting. All I can see is a leg and a pair of really skinny arms.

-Best Adapted Screenplay winner Jim Rash! Dean Pelton is an Oscar winner!

-Scorsese! (drink)

-Good to see Michael Douglas back presenting Best Director.

-In memoriam section quite late in the show. Oooh so this is why Esperanza Spalding is there. Lovely voice but we need to stop having singers accompany a montage of the deceased.

-Silent Clap for Jean Dujardin and his tap dance.

-Meryl Streep, it's been awhile. But Viola Davis, really deserves one too. (who's that guy screaming "Yeah!"?)

-The Artist wins Best Picture, but please Hollywood, do not ever remake it with some young American teeny bopper cast.

This was by far a better Oscars than in recent years, since Hugh Jackman successfully translated his Tony's hosting gig into Oscar gold in 2009.

February will be coming to a close soon. (Being the shortest month makes that very easy) Once the Oscars come and go, it's onto March Madness and winter's last chance to be winter in NYC.

A new month means a new birthstone and the royal depths of majestic Amethyst will make way for the wide ranging blue colored Aquamarine. Its color ranges from light light blue to slightly green blue to deep teal. Aquamarine can be considered as much a classic as a ruby, emerald, or sapphire.

A little bit of lore: Sailors used to wear aquamarine gemstones to ward off seasickness and keep them safe.

Warm Tones for Warm Weather

Bright is the motto of this Spring/Summer season. Two major colors that stand out are shades of orange and yellow based on Pantone's official selection for S/S 2012: Tangerine Tango and Solar Power.
There was a time when orange was too out there, too bold, not chic, reserved only for collegiate fashion. Now in the year 2012, the color of the moment is (officially called) Tangerine Tango and it's practically a fashion faux pas to go without.

If red is the color of passion, orange is its optimistic cousin. Associated with joy and celebration, it is an emotional stimulant that encourages laughter and self esteem.
Orange colors come in a scale of intensity amongst natural stones, especially in carnelian. It can go from light to intense deep orange within one stone. Such a piece would make a great compliment to a bold color block tangerine outfit.

While orange has the elements of yellow's happiness, yellow is just happy all the time! Solar Power can represent wisdom and a lust for life. It is an intellectual color, that will encourage individuality. The best stone to match almost perfectly is Citrine. A pair of large citrine drops would certainly be on trend this summer.

Large and chunky is still the style for 2012. Bib and collar necklaces are just as popular as long and layered "Jazz Age" looks. As always, in fashion, it is up to the individual to decide which trends rule. What trend has been your favorite so far?

Thanksgiving has many traditions: Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, family gatherings, those Native American headdresses & pilgrim hats made out of construction paper, Black Friday, more food. However, the point of Thanksgiving is to give thanks for the good parts of our lives, big or small.

So we went around the office today and asked our fellow staffers what they were thankful for.

You Better Pink

The pink ribbon is the official symbol and color of breast cancer awareness. Adopted in 1992 after Susan G. Komen for the Cure handed out pink ribbons during its annual breast cancer awareness race. Originally derived from the AIDS awareness red ribbon, the pink color was a natural choice to symbolize the cause against a cancer that targets women almost exclusively. Breast cancer can occur in men as well, which is symbolized by a pink and blue ribbon.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and during this month, pink is everywhere. It will be worn, illuminated, covered with, and projected on people, places and things all over the world. The most common show of support for the cause is to wear pink. Some offices or groups hold pink theme days in honor of the cause.

Many retailers have taken up the theme by offering a hand picked selection of pink items to purchase in order to raise funds. Fortunoff fine jewelry is holding a "Power of Pink" sale where portions of proceeds will go to benefit breast cancer research.

Recently launched flash site, Ruby Wallet has also taken the pink ribbon to heart and has incorporated it into their online masthead while also offering special pink styles.

Do your part this October and give what you can to further breast cancer research. So many of us are affected by breast cancer even if the connection is separated by a few degrees. We are in this fight together!

1. The meat of the shell is second only to escargot in popularity and can be eaten raw, over a salad or cooked in a chowder or made into burgers.

2. Conch shells are occasionally used as a building material, either in place of bricks, or as bulk for landfill.

3. Conch shells can be used as wind instruments. They are prepared by cutting a hole in the spire of the shell near the apex, and then blowing into the shell as if it were a trumpet, as in blowing horn. Sometimes a mouthpiece is used, but some shell trumpets are blown without one.

4. This shell is used as an important ritual object in Hinduism. The shell or Shankha is used as a ceremonial trumpet, as part of religious practices, for example puja.

Color on the Block

Color Blocking is everywhere you turn this year and will no doubt stay around into the next. Countless runway looks have been inspired with color blocking details. Dresses, pantsuits, and dressy tops..but do you accessorize? Why not?

Here are some of our favorite color block runway looks paired with different JewelMak styles.

Texture and color blocking together creates movement in an otherwise basic ensemble. This Alberta Ferretti dress has both neutrals and bold color, which match well with JewelMak's carnelian stretch bracelets and faceted bezel earrings in 14k yellow gold.

Having fun with your colors is key. This sequined number from DKNY is already festive. Belated Gala Thoughts...

The Met Gala was two weeks ago and a few things were clear: Right now fashion loves flowers, lace, sheer, and metallics. Also, if you put all those together in a mermaid silhouette you've got a winner!

I'm not a huge fan of either. Christina Ricci (in Zac Posen) and Beyonce (in Pucci) are clearly both fabulous in figure but lacking in the logistics of walking. Apparently Beyonce got booed for not posing long enough. I suspect it's due to her needing the extra time to get up the steps inside.

Dress trends aside, there were some great statement pieces on the red carpet as well. Most notably from the likes of Ginnifer Goodwin. Matchy matchy with her multi gemstone Y necklace.

And big dramatic drops on Emma Stone, Rihanna, and Bar Rafaeli.

Viva Las Vegas

JCK Las Vegas is fast approaching once more and everyone has their noses to their respective grindstones in preparation for the big show. JewelMak is no different. We're in the midst of producing some of our most eclectic and evolved collections to date. It's an exciting time right now, but not just because of our swirling production; it's a big year for JCK as well.

This year will see the new venue for the JCK Las Vegas show. Long held at the Sands Expo in the Venetian, it now finds itself at the Mandalay Bay. I remember the high buzz at last year's show. Everyone was speculating on the layout, size, atmosphere, even the state of the art technology of the venue. The reality will remain to be seen, but the anticipation is giving everyone ants in their pants.

At the end of the day, it's still about the jewelry. What's the new stone? The best color? With the gold cost soaring like it is, we might need to consider gold as endangered as the American Bald Eagle. This year, JewelMak is steadfast in presenting the best styles to combat the rising costs.

Oscarettes: a summary

Last night's Oscar telecast was by far the most awkward in its 83 year history. Despite James Franco's distraction with something to his above right off camera and Anne Hathaway's over perkiness, there were a few bright moments. Auto tune Musicals anyone? As for the fashion, it was almost a direct mirror of some of the new fashion trends we've been blogging about since the 2011 New York Fashion Week hit.

Most directly was the fact that it seems nearly everyone was either wearing red or pastel nudes. Both commonly seen trends on the runways.
Jennifer Lawrence was very simple and sexy in her tomato red Calvin Klein number that I found refreshing in its clean silhouette that featured a natural body. It was like a celebration of woman. (Hear me roar!) Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock both wore more couture gowns by Valentino and Vera Wang respectively. All three very classy choices.

The nude and neutrals of the carpet were exceptionally sparkly. Particularly Michelle Williams in Chanel Couture. The NY Times panned the gown as a boring white Tshirt dress with white beading. However, this is consistent with William's style and I can fully appreciate it. Mandy Moore's Monique Lhuillier gown had an ethereal quality with an illusion neckline. Halle Berry's Marchesa was a standard style of dress but seemed light and pretty with almost sheer gatherings at the bottom. Halee Steinfeld was very age appropriate also in Marchesa. Harking back to Audrey Hepburn á la Roman Holiday was a great choice and at ankle length, not a fashion follower.
The interesting detail about these looks is that the jewelry is minimal, since there is so much beading going on.

One of my favorites in the Red Carpet fashion pantheon is Cate Blanchett. She rarely disappoints and is always unique in her choices. Before Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan, she was the original red carpet fashionista. This Givenchy Haute Couture was a wonderful piece of structured art. Mila Kunis found a winner with her lacy Elie Saab. A trendy choice in fabric and color. The only problem with lavender on the red carpet is that it's not an instant knock out in a photograph. Much the same was made about Christina Hendricks lavender choice at the Golden Globes two years ago.

Metallics and the futuristic has not gone away and was equally represented at the Oscars. Annette Bening was all smiles in a Tron-inspired gown by Naeem Khan. Gwyneth Paltrow scored rave reviews all around for her gold metallic column by Calvin Klein. She was her own personal Oscarette and accented it with embellished multi gem earrings and brooch.
One of Hathaway's outfit changes was a metallic tone fringed gown. Two trends in one! Three really if you count the beaded neckline. Speaking of combining trends, Penelope Cruz looked like a reincarnation of the Burning Bush fire special effect from The Ten Commandments with a red on red L'Wren Scott gown. This dress is a perfect example of not being photogenic. It seems that it must have been beautiful in person, just not through a paparazzo's lens.

Natalie Portman was lovely and nice in a plum Rodarte gown. Apparently there was some controversy with her choice of Rodarte as she is currently the face of Dior and some thought she should have been wearing Dior. In her defense, Rodarte designed the ballet costumes for Black Swan and because of technicalities, they were not nominated. Another note would be that John Galliano was just accused of making anti-Semitic remarks in Paris and has been suspended from his duties at Dior. So between the two "loyalties", Portman was in a lose lose situation when it comes to those critics.

When I first saw Scarlett Johansson I thought she was a purple disaster. I'm still not in love with it but it's less of a mess now that I can see its detail. But the hair... What a hot mess. She's right up there with JLo's Barbarella bob in the Worst Hair of Oscar History list.

Amy Adams had a fashion hit with her deep blue glittered & capped gown. The emeralds were beautiful too, but I was not a fan of them together.

Honorable mentions:
Reese Witherspoon: Not a fan of the pony tail but looked great in a vintage style Armani Prive.

Helena Bonham Carter: Looking rather normal in an all black ensemble she collaborated on with Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. Does she keep that hair on a shelf for awards shows? It's like she kept it on since the Golden Globes.

Robert Downey Jr: Best suit of the night. Awesome navy color. Lined lapels. White on white shirt tie combo.Just cool.
Interesting side note, wife Susan was wearing earrings of Angelina Jolie's design that looked just like the emerald ones Jolie wore two years ago.

Eh..not so much
Melissa Leo: A dress of eyelet by Marc Bower, which was thankfully overshadowed by her obnoxious F-bomb.

Jennifer Hudson: We love your body too. Now please let it breathe in that tangerine Versace.

Fashion wise the trends were there just not all properly combined. It was a fairly underwhelming Oscars to say the least. So all I can say is, Thank you Kirk Douglas.

Seeing Red

Although it's not on the list of Pantone's Spring/Summer colors for 2011, Bright Tomato Red is the color this year. From what we've seen on the runways this past Fashion Week in NY, it's all about red. Red is a classic color of confidence so Be Bold!

Not comfortable with that much boldness? Use it best with accents to your outfit by investing in accessories. A bright red bag goes a long way. A thin belt, shoes, scarves etc.

The latest trend to hit the red carpet in spades?

Sleeves.

A noticeable number of celebrities were dismissing their right to bare arms last night at the Golden Globes. Long, short, and one-sided, sleeves were as popular as one shoulder gowns were last year.

Natural nudes, pastels and even bold colors were the popular hues last night. Emma Stone had all the boxes checked with her peach Calvin Klein and short sleeves.
Scarlett Johannsen will get points for her attempt at glamour with the updo and voluminous sleeves, but I found her overall look dowdy and busy. She was a glittery version of Grey Gardens.

Ruffles in various shapes and sizes were on display as well.

For every sleeved arm, there was a bare neck. Most ladies opted for statement earrings or just diamond studs. Bejeweled gowns were also on trend last night which cut down on opportunities in designer jewelry. Julianne Moore was high fashion with her asymetrical hot pink cream puff one shouldered Lanvin long sleeved gown with a bejeweled collar. The biggest bling came from Dame Helen Mirren with her Cartier necklace worth over a million dollars.

The red carpet has seen more fashion forward styles this past year and that continued with January Jones with another structural oddity from Versace and Olivia Wilde's black and gold bejeweled princess gown with sky high embellished heels.

The best dressed of the night for us was Anne Hathaway. Her Armani Privé gown was bodly elegant and consistent with what we expect of her.

A planet full of natural diamonds? Is it too good to be true?

According to a most recent discovery by astronomers, a new planet(WASP-12b)could be made up of moutains of diamonds due to its high carbon-to-oxygen ration:

"The high carbon-to-oxygen ratio indicates a carbide or diamond interior rather than the silicate geology of the Earth," said Nikku Madhusudhan, a Princeton astrophysicist, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Still, the "mountain of diamonds" is only a theory and needs to be explored more thoroughly. But wouldn't that be awesome?

The phone app has officially taken over the world of consumerism this holiday season. More people are buying online than ever and a great deal of those are over their phones. This past weekend was the official start of the holiday shopping season and has always been a barometer of retail sales for rest of the year.

Well things seem to be looking up, with more shoppers out and online this weekend. We can expect this continue. Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi was quoted "The holiday season is no longer black Friday or bust, it's really becoming Black November". (Forbes.com) This increase in consumerism, it's important for retailers to stay aggressive through the season. Retail buying happens at such a rate that no one can afford to wait for event days.

Once the main holiday gifting season has passed, it will then turn to the challenge of retailers maintaining such interest and investment for Valentine's Day...

First things first: Great job Jimmy Fallon on a great, fun opening number.

This was definitely a year of obvious trends. Can we say One Shoulder? With the exception of the love it/mostly hated January Jones Versace Atelier dress, last night featured many lovely style choices.

Looks we loved:

Arguably the best of the night, Claire Danes wearing Armani Privé pink arched strapless dress completely beaded. She accented it all with a very large diamond pave ring. Overall the look was soft and regal with the exception of her powerplant spray tan glow.

Jane Lynch's purple taffeta one shoulder form fitting dress by Ali Rahimi with a small brooch accent from her sister in law. This look was different for her in the fit, since she has been seen wearing similar jewel tones but with larger more princess style skirts. Last night's choice was still in her wheelhouse and she looked terrific.

Ty Burell from Modern Family in a PeeWee Herman inspired gray flannel suit. Bow tie included. It was a fashion risk and some fashion purists will hate it but the look was fitting for the character he plays and made us laugh so we loved it. However the brown shoes left much to be desired.

Jesse Tyler Furgeson should give his co-star pointers on the shoes because his own uniquely different choice rocked.

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta navy blue strapless dress. Great hair and love the dark nails. the wraparound ruffles at the bottom of the skirt was a great accent. She was one of the few who wore major jewelry pieces with a statement bib collar necklace and large cuff.

Keri Russell in a bright pink vintage Jean Louis Sherrer dress that was very Marilyn Monroe-esque.

Sofia Vergara in a soft yellow with gold detailing from the Carolina Herrara Resort 2010 collection accented with her pronounciation of Herrrara.

Kim Kardashion in white Marchesa gown with white and gold egyptian style beaded halter neckline with a long forearm cuff.

Jayma Mays in a staple navy blue strapless Burberry Prorsum with vintage style gold Neil Lane necklace and beaded bracelets.

Not so much love:

Tina Fey in a black beaded over satin Oscar de la Renta form fitting dress. There wasn't a lot of bling on the carpet, yet we would have liked the ensemble a little better without her choice of drop earrings.

Kate Gosselin. She just shouldn't be there.

January Jones in that bright electric blue very constructed Versace Atelier. We give her PR team credit. This choice got everyone talking, but more in the any press is good press approach. She wore the same designer last year but that choice was a positive showstopper. This year's dress is definitely made for show, but perhaps not for actual wearable reality. Given that, she did not seem to care about anything else. The bedhead was not appropiate and you just don't wear black shoes with such a dress. It was an odd ensemble.

Christina Hendricks. We love her dearly. She's been doing for curvy women what Crystal Renn has been claiming to do, but her Zac Posen dress was a miss. Lavender is not her color and no one should wear ostrich feathers.

Jewel in a pink bejeweled tiered dress with a sweetheart neckline by Zuhair Murad. We are not a fan of pink nor were we fans of those large drop earrings that looked like a kindergartener made them during arts & crafts.

Of all the jewelry trends that were on display, large drop earrings and cuffs were definitely in. Pics soon to follow. In the meantime, do you agree on our list?

JCK Vegas!

As all of us in the jewelry biz know, JCK Las Vegas is a big show. The biggest of them all really. We've been part of this show for practically the last 15 years and just like the show, we've expanded and changed our face through the years as well.

It was a great success! Everything about this year's show worked well. The new booth set up gave us the best results we've ever seen. Instead of our usual array of showcase lined walls, we instead moved it all to the forefront. It allowed our customers to have a better view of our collection without feeling too crowded.

We used the show and our new booth set up to promote two new collections we had: Caribbean Bliss and Eclipse. They were our big hits! Everyone loved the Eclipse earrings and bangles, and who could blame them? Hot looks for such a great price point. The same can be said about our Caribbean Bliss collection. For many the collection featuring Larimar was an educational experience. Many have never heard of the stone or had any idea of its exclusive origin.

Kiva, the .Org

In continuation with JewelMak's charity work. We have become a contributer to Kiva.org. Kiva has been innovative in creating a global community by combining microfinance and the internet in an aim to decrease poverty around the world. By giving the world a platform to offer financial support to each other, motivates a sense of unity and pride that is unmatched in its inspiration.

JewelMak currently donated towards helping women in the Samana District of the Dominican Republic. We chose this group and future groups based on our preference of empowering women. Kiva follows a number of charitable organizations JewelMak contributes such as charity: water and the William J Clinton Foundation.

There is a new metal creating waves in the jewelry industry. Tungsten

Tungsten has become a popular metal in jewelry, particularly men’s jewelry. This is mainly due to its harsh durability, naturally dark hue and modern look. Tungsten or Tungsten carbide has a high resistance to scratching and bending. It's stronger than diamonds, unscratchable, undentable. Götz Switzerland has a masculine tungsten collection with chain link bracelets and rings, both faceted and textured.

Match Maker Series: Aurora

In honor of the first week of sunny days this year, today's select color for the Match Maker series is the Pantone Spring/Summer 2010 color Aurora. This season, bright yellow is best matched with equally happy colors. Some would contrast it with darker hues in colder tones set in gold, which would also work nicely. Deep purples or rich dark blues would certainly suffice and give any outfit of yellow a serious, harder look. But we're moving into the season of fun in the sun, so contrasts should be bright and fun.

A fun contrast is JewelMak's magnesite turquoise necklace pictured above. It's much like wearing a print. Against the bright yellow, this necklace definitely pops.

Of course not everyone wears yellow so boldly. You may wear prints featuring yellow. In that case, there's nothing wrong with being monochromatic either.

The Match Maker Series is dedicated to showcasing a choice color along with a select jewelry style that either match or compliment the color. Some choices may be safe and some may seem unconventional, but stylish.

We begin our Match Maker series with the color Amparo Blue.

Amparo Blue is pretty close to your basic blue and is among the ten colors featured in Pantone's Fashion Colors for Spring/Summer 2010. Blue in general is a very commonly worn color. It looks good on most skin tones and is the universal color category for all things "Boy". Lucky for us, fashion does not discriminate when it comes to its textiles. Therefore, neither does jewelry. Our complimentary selection for today's choice color of Amparo Blue is JewelMak's three row necklace with Magnesite Turquoise, Turquoise coated Mother of Pearl, and Heminorphine.

Making a Statement...With Jewelry

This year's Academy Awards once again proved one major fashion habit about the Hollywood elite: When it comes to jewelry, they stick with what's safe. And what's safe is diamonds on top of more diamonds.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with diamonds. They are in fact, a girl's best friend. A fact that has been reiterated throughout pop culture (ie. Marilyn Monroe to Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge) Diamonds are sought after not only because they sparkle for the cameras, but more importantly they match every outfit. The traditional white diamond goes with any choice and therefore make a great accent to the "dress".

In the red carpet rule book, it's all about the dress. That is the question first and foremost on the mind of every correspondent. But every once in a while, a daring individual will flip that rule on its head and make a statement with the jewelry.

The perfect example would be Angelina Jolie's 2009 Oscar look. She wore an elegant black Elie Saab gown that night, but the only thing people could talk about was the pair of large emerald drops at her ears. Of course, being Angelina Jolie, a stream of imitations flooded the market the next morning. Although, who can blame them?
