Baby Got Back-lace: 85th Academy Awards Red Carpet

The 85th Academy Awards was a pretty tame red carpet and ceremony this year. There was no Angelina this time, so who were we to look towards for that odd stand out piece of jewelry or limb? Perhaps we are just expecting too much and anything less than eyebrow raising just leaves us unimpressed. Once again, the longest, most self indulgent of awards shows started a half hour later than all others at 8:30pm EST but the red carpet coverage started 3 hours before and the trends were a mixed bag.

If we were to nominate anyone or thing for the "New Trend" award, it would probably be the backlace style Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway were sporting last night. The back-centric necklace is nothing new. JLaw wore a long 74 carat diamond chain from Chopard while Hathaway (or A-Ha as we would like to call her) was rocking the diamond encrusted tassel style. The look was best worn by the great movie icon, Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. Once the summer hits and the skin starts showing, guaranteed, young women everywhere will be wearing these bejeweled/possible strangling hazards everywhere - and it will be glorious. The only competition would be Quvenzhane Wallis' puppy purse.

The red carpet ears were adorned with various trends, as is usually the case. The go to classic diamond studs were as common as ever, while the new trend we were excited to see were long linear earrings. A style we've been championing recently. Zoe Saldana looked very lovely with her layered and creative Alexis Mabille dress with long diamond and pearl drop earrings by Neil Lane. Octavia Spencer accessorized her always trusted designer Tadashi Shoji gown with tassel drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Stacy Keibler, the still current Clooney Girl, wore a linear style also by Lorraine Schwartz.

The arm party continues on the red carpet with Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, and Naomi Watts all sporting various styles of stacked and statement bracelets. Theron was on trend in white Armani Privé and Harry Winston. Jennifer Aniston was a red hot standout in her very clean and billowing Valentino in its signature red color with Fred Leighton jewels.

Necklaces made a mini comeback this year. Jennifer Garner and Helen Hunt wore princess bib necklaces by Neil Lane and Martin Katz respectively. Newcomer, Samantha Barks (the tiniest waist since Vivian Leigh) wore a statement necklace by Forevermark.

The gowns this year were all over metallic and shiny in a very glittery, sequined, and bejeweled way. From the all over beaded look of Adele and Meryl to the jewel encrusted Kerry Washington, it was a year to sparkle. Naomi Watts was ready for war in a one sleeve-sweetheart combo neckline by Armani Privé. Her pal, a shining advert for spanx, Nicole Kidman was in a very formfitting gold and black L'Wren Scott. Kerry Washington was luminous in a jeweled top bright coral Miu Miu dress.

Halle Berry was the inverted Jennifer Lopez with a custom designed Versace. It looked great when she was walking to the mic, but did not please the eye on the red carpet. The sharp shouldered, long sleeve silhouette was also worn by Jane Fonda in a bright lemon zest Atelier Versace.

Nude and Gold were standards last night with Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé and Harry Winston. Catherine Zeta-Jones was rocking a Zuhair Murad, known for glittery glam, with big statement Lorraine Schwartz drop earrings. Her Chicago co-star, Renee Zellwegger wore shimmery gold Carolina Herrera, which was a less of a surprise than just seeing her there.

Random Notes:

Robin Roberts in a deep blue velvet Marc Bouwer - Looking great after a very tough year.

Anne Hathaway in pink Prada - The new nipple gate. Why would you pick a dress with seams so unfortunately placed? Then also pose like this?

Amy Adams in pale blue Oscar De La Renta - Beautiful dress and the fit was great. We just find it an odd choice for a very pale redhead. She and Jessica Chastain both wear pale colors from time to time and we always wish they would wear bright or deep jewel tones.

Jennifer Garner in deep purple Gucci - We wish there was a shot of that dress immediately after being sat on for five hours.

Sandra Bullock in lace Elie Saab - You knew what you were doing when you made that face

Kristen Stewart in Reem Acra - Great dress, hot mess everywhere else. It's OK to cancel an appearance if you cannot walk.

Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen - Bringing the 90's back.

Amanda Seyfried also in Alexander McQueen - Don't wear the dress if you will end up telling people you can't stand, sit or walk in it.

John Travolta - You need to make more movies so people can get used to seeing you. It's a bit jarring right now.

And another award season over. Let's see what trends will creep its way into the mainstream this Spring.
