The 70th annual Golden Globes was a mix of cool fashion and 'interesting' choices. Here we rundown our favorites and the ones that we just don't understand...
As the ManRepeller would say, the 2013 Golden Globes red carpet was a total "arm party". Many of the leading ladies chose a bare collar bone over a statement necklace, yet statement earrings were still going strong. Lorraine Schwartz was a favorite and very on trend with vintage style earrings in various gems besides diamonds. Just in time for the Great Gatsby. Julianne Moore was a walking billboard for having good connections with her Tom Ford dress and Bvlgari jewelry. The dramatic drop earrings and statement cuff were unexpected accessories to such a simplistic dress. It pays to be BFF's with Tom Ford
and the face of a luxury jewelry brand.
Long linear earrings are something to look out for in 2013.

In case you were unsure of what to wear: Lace is what you should be wearing. Not just any lace - the sparkly, sheer, nude lined, just covering the bits kind of lace. Lace is hard to wear without looking matronly or trashy. Jennifer Lopez was all over the lace last night in a Zuhair Murad gown. She was also sporting the very common side swept curls hair style. So if she plans to get married again, we know what her back up will be. Eva Longoria couldn't decide what new or old trend to go with so she did it all. Long sleeves, lace, plunging keyhole, and high slit. Thigh high slits were not a new thing when Angelina Jolie enthusiastically sported one at last year's Academy Awards, but her vamping was. So now everyone's gotta do the pose. (Looking right at you Halle Berry) Tina Fey walked the red carpet in a very vintage look by L'Wren Scott. Thandie Newton went the short route in a sheer Giles Deacon dress that would only work on a petite frame like hers.
Sheer over short seems to be the actual new red carpet trend, but it only worked for one person: Kerry Washington in a nude and silver sparkly Miu Miu. It was all the right amounts of interesting and well fit. Even the hemline worked. These sheer skirts are hard to hem. Rachel Weiss looked marvelous from the waist up. Once we got a full body shot, it was too long and took away from the cute elegance of the top. Louise Row is in that same boat, except she's just not even trying. Julianna Marguilies has had a long track record of dresses that are just a tad off. Perhaps it was the choice in hair style. It may have actually been better if she had gone along with the trend and done a side swept curl. Her Emilio Pucci dress also looked too long.
Speaking of sheer, there were a few sheer tops as well. Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco had a great dress going for her with a very well fit Zuhair Murad but did not match it well with intense make up. Julianne Hough was a bursting combination of sheer overlay, gold beading on white, and layers of tulle in a Monique Lhuillier gown. It was photographically interesting to say the least but like Ms. Cuoco, her makeup was giving her a bit of crazy eye.
Pantone's most recent color choices for this Spring/Summer season featured Linen, a pastel nude hue. This red carpet, pale pink and white were also a common site on the red carpet. Amy Adams was the poster girl while Megan Fox and Hayden Panettiere were sweet and girly in solid go to silhouettes by Dolce & Gobanna and Roberto Cavalli respectively. Lea Michele, the tannest girl in Ohio, wore a bright white Elie Saab with a thigh high slit and it was of course, sparkly.
Winner Jessica Chastain was very ethereal in a Calvin Klein halter dress with mid 20th century hair that for some reason made me think of Gary Oldman in Dracula. Of all her red carpet looks, this was not her best but was still very classy. Plus, you have to give props to her hair team for such a enduring sculpture. Julie Bowen was following her own drummer with a one shoulder draped Halston, but she was on trend with big drop earrings and stacked jeweled bangles. Nicole Richie continuing her love affair with long sleeves, in a blue beaded Naeem Khan.
Florals are still the trend and we saw various degrees of garden displays. Lucy Liu went literal in a Carolina Herrara floral princess style gown. Totally Cinderella with a print, but let's not discuss the braid.
Reds are the new Tangerine Tango. Marion Cotilard in her staple Dior, rocking a fishtail hem or a sideways mullet hem. Jennifer Lawrence in a very tight Dior Couture with bust enhancements. Jennifer Garner in a very thick looking Vivienne Westwood in her favorite strapless sweetheart style. Zooey Deschanel was the only one wearing very simple and classic pearls with her Oscar De La Renta gown.
Gold necklines seem to be the answer to.... Well Lady Mary aka Michelle Dockery lead the charge in a Alexandre Vaulthier dress. One of the few who can look even skinnier in white. Heidi Klum with her million dollar insured legs followed suit. Kate Hudson came equally prepared with a high neck Alexander McQueen.
Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara were both stunning in sparkly black strapless gowns, it's as if they planned it. Kristen Wiig, plain as ever in Michael Kors. At least it looked really comfortable. Zosia Mamet, the lesbian on Mad Men and now the virgin on Girls, has been on a fashionable streak as of late and her Tony Ward Couture dress was no exception.
We should all acknowledge the biggest shocker of the night. Taylor Swift was neither wearing lace nor was she wearing something that sparkled. She was actually wearing a Donna Karan frock that was a dark wine color with a straight and high neckline. What's going on Taylor? Did that boy from that boy band break your heart? Are you expressing how you feel about being forever(rightly) overshadowed by Adele's overwhelming real talent? Because you did not look pleased about losing. Probably due to your lack of solid satin dressing experience, we all know you spent a long time sitting in your limo. It should also be noted that Lena Dunham's dress was sooooo much better than her Prada choice at the Emmy's. Designed by her former baby sitter, Zac Posen, it was feminine and had great lines for a curvy girl. It was just too bad she could only walk as if she were a toddler in her mother's heels. Naomi Watts was another one of at least three wearing Zac Posen and was definitely the best. It is very hard to pull off long sleeves, a high neckline, and a train all at once without looking like a sacrifice.
Other Thoughts:
Katharine McPhee: Your dress was reminiscent of Mariah Carey, but not in a good way.
Emily Blunt: We love you.
Nicole Kidman: We want to love it because it's Alexander McQueen...
Claire Danes: Wait, you had a baby?
Glenn Close: Have you ever seen that Simpsons episode where Marge keeps resewing the same outfit every time she goes to the country club? We know you like your shrugs and jackets over dresses, but give Zac Posen a challenge next time.
Rosario Dawson: Great look, but where have you been lately?
Kelly Osbourne: The purple hair is still around... why? Your whole look would have been so classic with your bright blonde. Call us a broken record.
Helen Mirren: Sassy in Badgley Mischka.
Has anyone noticed Jon Bon Jovi, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Michael Bay share the same barber?
Up Next: The Grammys. Now that is a guarantee bunch of interesting fashion choices.
